A Day to Remember

Sunday morning dawned bright and clear and rather warm. Our Pipe Band began the solemn march from St Andrew’s College up the main street of Grahamstown, all the way to the Cathedral in Church Square in commemoration of Poppy Day.

In the spring of 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, was inspired by the sight of poppies growing in battle-scarred fields to write a now famous poem called ‘In Flanders Fields’. After the First World War, the poppy was adopted as a symbol of Remembrance and continues still to remind us of the brave men and women who fought for our freedom.
