Part of the Prep Team – Our Grade 00 Teacher

Mrs Cathy Brown joined us a couple of years ago as our Grade 00 Teacher. She was born in Johannesburg and spent all of her happy childhood in the big city. She writes: I started my schooling journey at a little Pre-School called Thabili (where my love for nursery school began) and then went to a great government school called Montrose Primary School in Sandton. In Standard 4 (as it was called in those days) I was lucky enough to attend St Mary’s School for Girls in Waverly and this is where I matriculated. After school I had no doubt about what I wanted to study and went straight to Johannesburg College of Education to study a Pre-primary and Junior primary Diploma in Education.
After qualifying, I went to London to work and travel. I did supply teaching in London and taught at some very challenging inner London schools. After two years of travelling and supply teaching, I decided to head home to South Africa. My parents had moved to Durban, so I followed and taught at a small Pre-Primary School called Glenridge Pre-Primary school. 1999 was an exciting year for me! I got married and moved to Shrewsbury in the UK. My family and I spent nine years in the UK and were lucky enough to be boarding house parents and teachers at two wonderful Prep Schools in Nottinghamshire.
In 2008, we headed on another adventure and went to live and work in Dubai. (I needed some warmth and sunshine!) I spent eight happy years teaching at Repton School and then headed up the nursery year group (age 3-4). In 2016 we moved to Kenya, where we lived and worked at Pembroke House Prep School.
In 2019 we headed back home to South Africa and in 2020 I became part of St Andrew’s Prep.

I come from a very closely knit family. No matter where I have been in the world, my family has always been there for me and have come to visit. My husband Jason is living in Durban as Headmaster of Clifton College. Our two sons Jack and Jamie areat St Andrew’s College.

I love to read and read a lot, so am always on the lookout for a new good book. I have always enjoyed walking and once I start, I can just keep on going. Luckily for me I have managed some wonderful walks on beaches, in the desert and over mountains. Spending time with my precious family is what brings me the most joy.

The Prep Pre-Primary is like my family away from home. I am lucky enough to work with some truly wonderful, down to earth ladies, a few gentlemen and devoted teachers. I have continued to grow as a teacher and have enjoyed having an insight into a new curriculum. Early Years Education is still my true passion.
Teaching little children through the years, I have seen it all and heard it all. I have laughed and cried!
