Promising Rugby Star:
Timothy Bloem from St Andrew's Prep was awarded the PJ Olivier Rugby Festival best player of the tournament trophy for 2011.  Well done Tim and we look forward to seeing your skills come into play during the up-coming rugby season.

St Andrew's Prep visit Brookshaw Homes
The Prep music department recently treated the folk at Brookshaw to a special concert and sumptuous tea.  Quite a number of the Brookshaw community have a past affiliation with the school, which made the visit extra special, as they watched and enjoyed as these young talented musicians performed for them.

Preppies and Ben Bezuidenhout run for the aged:
The Grade 7s joined Mr Ben Bezuidenhout of Somerset Place for the first leg he ran from Port Alfred to Grahamstown to raise funds for the aged.  The boys ran in relays, starting from the Halyards Hotel and finished at the Bathurst Showgrounds.

The St Andrew's Prep Grade 6 boys visited local sculptor Bruce Little in his Grahamstown studio recently. Bruce took the boys step-by-step through the whole process of bronze sculpting, a very interesting and complicated process indeed. Bruce specializes in wild animal sculpting, having been a game ranger for 20 years and someone who still has a close interest in an Eastern Cape game farm, the boys were lucky enough to see him busy on a life size baby elephant, kudu head and many other works too. He holds a biennial exhibition in London and is at present getting ready to take a large shipment over there for this exhibition.

Nic Kroon - Maths Mind!
Nicholas Kroon has been selected as part of a team of four from Grahamstown, to participate in an International Mathematics Competition to be held in Bali, Indonesia, in July this year. This is an excellent achievement - well done Nic.
Thomas Hagspihl (team leader) and Eunice Timm will be accompanying 4 Grade 7s from Grahamstown to Bali, Indonesia later on next term as the Ministry of National Education of Indonesia have invited 4 cities from South Africa to attend an  international Maths competition there.  The cities who will be going are from Durban, Bloemfontein, Cape Town and Grahamstown!  The competition entails being exposed to both an individual and group competition where they will be put through their paces in solving various maths problems.  All schools in Grahamstown were invited to send their top mathematicians to sit for the exam.  At the end of the day Jessica Ferreira (DSG Junior), Nic Kroon (SAP) as well as Paula Duxbury and Chris Matthews (Kingswood) qualified. The four Grade 7s from Grahamstown will be gone from 17th July until about 24th July.

Prep's rugby season got off to a good start this last weekend when two of the senior teams (U13A and B) took part in the annual Frans Erasmus Rugby Festival hosted by PJ Olivier. Our boys played good, structured rugby which bodes well for the coming winter season.

Prep U13A team Cricket tour to Cape Town:
The Prep U13A cricketers closed the cricket season with a tour to Cape Town where they participated in the Independent Schools Cricket Festival. They enjoyed three tough matches under difficult conditions. Well done to all the boys - in particular our spinners who thrived on the Cape tracks - on giving a good account of themselves. The boys produced a noteworthy performance against Western Province Prep, winning by 1 wicket in a tense encounter. The fortunes of both teams see-sawed throughout the day but, in the end, the Currie Cup, a trophy awarded to the prevailing team in any sport fixture between our two schools, returns to Grahamstown!

Prep Wins the Currie Cup:
A new tradition was started in 2005 when St Andrew's Prep hosted the Independent Prep Schools Cricket Festival here in Grahamstown, whereby a trophy was donated by a Mr Seymour Currie a parent of WPPS (Western Province Prep School - CT) otherwise known as Wet Pups. Thus the 'Currie Cup' was born. The trophy would be presented to the winning school and held at that school in any contest played between these 2 schools, whether it be sport or cultural. This year, St Andrew's Prep U13A cricket team went down to Cape Town for the Independent Prep Schools Cricket Festival and played WPPS (otherwise know as Wet Pups) on Day 2 of the tournament. The cricket was tough with Prep winning by one wicket, and so it was that the Currie Cup returned to St Andrew's Prep once again - for now at least!

St Andrew's Prep play the Tiger Titans:
There was great excitement at the St Andrew's Prep Fairlawn fields recently in the first of what will hopefully be ongoing fixtures vs. the Tiger Titans Junior teams. This was the 1st match ever for these young Tiger Titans players and their excitement was tangible as they warmed up, kitted out in their brand new, sponsored cricket kit. The youngsters were transported through from Bathurst by St Andrews Prep, with their U11 team playing Prep's U11C team and their U13 team playing Prep's U13D teams.  A great afternoon's cricket was had by all.

The St Andrew's Prep Senior children took part in the 8km Makana Brick Night Race recently.
Although the race was long and hard for some, all the boys completed it and some in very good times. Well done one and all and to the Fairlawn boys and girls and Mr Paul for manning the water table in Pear Lane, a much needed 'refreshment and encouragement' point for the runners!

The Grade 6's from DSG and Prep enjoyed 3 glorious days at Ingwe Forest Camp near Plett.  A swim in the sea and a trip down the Keurbooms River also formed part of their time away. They had a great time of getting to know one another better and of team building.

The St Andrew's Prep boys were thrilled to have Riaan Manser, extraordinary explorer visit Grahamstown and be based at Prep during his "Fridge Tour' around South Africa.
He is in training for an Icelandic journey which will include St Andrew's Old Boy Dan Skinstad. In the past seven years Riaan Manser has re-written the definition of tenacity and become the epitome of determination.Riaan has become renowned for his adventuring spirit which has taken him on some extraordinary journey's, most notably he became the first person to cycle around the entire perimeter of Africa. For over two years, he pedalled a mammoth 37,000kms through 34 countries; some of which rank as the most dangerous places on Earth. It was a feat that earned him the title Adventurer of the Year 2006 and made his resulting book, 'Around Africa on my bicycle', a best-seller. Riaan recently circumnavigated the world's fourth largest island of Madagascar by kayak, alone and unaided.  In April 2010, Riaan's efforts were rewarded with his second accolade, Adventurer of the year 2009.
Now Riaan plans to take on mystical Iceland and her arctic waters. A change of temperature and scenery, yes, but even more notable is that this time he will be partnered. Again another special journey that will see Riaan conquer new worlds while his partner, Dan Skinstad conquers his own physical disabilities. A journey of inspiration. In preparation for Iceland, Riaan is spending 10 days in a 40-foot container fridge at -20c. Warming up for Iceland 'The Fridge Tour' is in support of No Food for Lazy Man - an initiative, formed by Riaan, to bring about social change by investing in sporting equipment and infrastructure for schools who don't have access to these resources.

The first 5 preppies home were: James Mills, Nikos Aylett, Joshua Starr, Chris Higgins and Connor Wishart. The winning house was Lions, 2nd Griffin and then Tigers. A perfect way to get to know new teachers and classmates, while experiencing the great outdoors with team building and problem solving activities - lot of fun was had in the process.

Old Preppie, Sharlto Copley, recently visited St Andrew's Prep.
Sharlto is a South African producer, actor and director who played 'Wikus van der Merwe' in the 2009 sci-fi blockbuster District 9 and more recently 'Murdoch' in The A-Team.  Our current Preppies enjoyed showing him around his old school and he joined in their traditional playground games at break.

Welcome to all our new Preppies!
