The Grade 4's studied the Greeks as an Ancient Civilisation, they did projects, artwork and learnt so much.  We ended off our study with an evening with the parents where the boys did presentations on all the aspects of Ancient Greece that they had learnt in class and then we had a feast of Ancient Greek food.  A lovely evening was had by all.

YOUNG GRAHAMSTOWN MATHEMATICIANS PERFORM WELL IN BALI, INDONESIA!
Teams from Grahamstown, Cape Town and Bloemfontein represented South Africa in the recent International Mathematics Competition which was held in Bali, Indonesia from the 18th - 23rd July 2011. Our team from Grahamstown participated in the Keystage II competition (12-13years) and were amongst 66 teams who participated from all over the world. Although the standard of Mathematics was of an extremely high standard, our team consisting of Jess Ferreira (DSG Junior), Nic Kroon (St Andrew's Prep), Chris Matthews and Paula Duxbury (both Kingswood Junior) did us proud and successfully achieved a merit award for their efforts in the team category. Not only have they been given the chance the represent their country, but they also learnt a great deal about the way of life of the Balinese people and met a diverse range of people from across the globe. The team was accompanied by Mr Thomas Hagsphil, director of Mathematics from SAC as well as Mrs Eunice Timm, the Grade 7 teacher from DSG Junior.

St Andrew's Prep and DSG Junior combined for this year's Art & Music evening held at Prep.
The boys and girls entertained parents, staff and friends royally in a 'theatre supper format' during the 'Rock On' concert performed by the school's energetic and talented choirs. The Grade 4-7 art and craft adorned the walls of Memory Hall in a vibrant and colourful art exhibition.  A great evening was enjoyed by all whom attended the 2 evening performances.

EP National Schools Squash Tournament in Pretoria:
Joshua Marx, Peter Jarvis, Matthew Meiklejohn and Carlo Da Costa played in the EP "B" Section of the SA Schools National Tournament held in Pretoria at the end of June 2011.
Peter  and Josh  were unbeaten in the tournament with neither of them losing a match! The U11 "Preppies" took up the challenge, soaked up the pressure and played wonderful and intelligent squash and the boys gained valuable squash experience. They all got on so well together, played as a team and encouraged each other through every game and match. There was true EP spirit in the team. They also showed true EP grit and sportsmanship.  All-in-all a wonderful experience for the "Preppie" boys who did EP, their school, their parents and themselves proud!

The St Andrew's Prep U13A Hockey, Rugby and Squash sides as well as the Marimba Band travelled to Gauteng for their traditional Winter Tour this year.
The boys played against St John's, The Ridge in Johannesburg and WHPS in Pretoria, winning every one of their games in all sporting codes, bar a 1 point loss in a close rugby match vs. WHPS. The Marimba band played to full school audiences at each school, bringing the house down with their performances wherever they went. The tour also included some fun sightseeing and adventures to places like Gold Reef City. A great time was had by all!

The St Andrew's Prep boys gave 67 mins (and more) of their time on Nelson Mandela's Birthday as part of the global initiative to recognise each person's individual power to make an imprint and help change the world around them for the better. The Prep boys, some staff members together with Mr Lorraine Mullins, who works closely with on the Cowie Catchment campaign to eradicate alien vegetation in and around Grahamstown, walked up to the hillside above Grahamstown, behind Rhodes University and set about removing alien vegetation from the area. Pulling and using tree poppers, the large group was able to make a significant dent to an area's alien vegetation population as they swept up and across the hill in the area working tirelessly as they went. A tiered but satisfied group returned to school after having given something back in the Name of Nelson Mandela.

JP Laptops
We are delighted to announce the introduction of Junior Laptops in the foundation phase.  We have acquired 26 laptops which the children have been enjoying immensely. We have a charging cabinet in the Library and now on our computer days - we collect and take them to our individual classrooms. Here we are able to set up a projector and display the enlarged visual onto the white board as an excellent teaching tool. We are following a new IT curriculum and we have access to Mathletics . This will enhance our children's exposure to IT in an ever changing world.

St Andrew's Prep continues to support the Grahamstown community in all sorts of ways.
Prep were delighted to help the plight of very under-resourced and poor schools in Grahamstown when GADRA put out a request for stationary. Kelly Long, a Prep parent,  who is employed by GADRA spoke to the Top Prep boys about where the donated items would be going and what a huge difference their donation would make to other children's lives. Prep was also able to hand over a cheque for R5000 to Somerset Place Retirement home last week, from its sponsored run from Port Alfred to Bathurst with Ben Bezuidenhout. There are a number of ex-Preppies who live at Somerset Place and it is always wonderful to support all sectors of our community.
