Meet our Grade 3 Teacher: Mrs Heidi Fowlds, who joined us in a chat about herself and her family:
Q: Where were you born and where did you grow up?
I was born in Grahamstown and grew up in a little rural town called Alexandria. It was wonderful growing up in a little town, as we could ride our bikes all over and play sport all afternoon with our friends. It was the essence of the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child”.
Q: Give us a bit of info about your school and work history:
I went to boarding school in Grahamstown at Victoria Girls’ High School and studied my B.Prim Ed teaching degree at UPE. When I qualified, I taught in East London for two years while I saved up for my ticket to London. I spent seven years teaching in various systems around the UK and travelled a great deal. This is also where I met the man God intended for me, my husband, William Fowlds. How funny is it that both of us went to school in Grahamstown and then met in London!
Q: Tell us about your family:
Will and I came back to South Africa and got married in 1999. We went back to the UK and finished a few more years working and travelling. We returned in 2002, to manage Leeuwenbosch, on Amakhala Game Reserve, which is Will’s family home and farm where he grew up. He then set up his Wildlife Vet practice and I was the lodge manager and marketed the Game Lodge until 2009, when I started teaching at St Andrew’s Prep. We have three beautiful children. We love Jesus and know that He is always in control of our lives. I do believe, and sometimes it is the hardest thing to, but that God promises that all things work for our good.
Q: What are your personal interests and hobbies:
I have fallen back into running in my later years and so am really enjoying a few trail runs and being in nature. I love the beach and spending time with my friends and family. I also love chilling out with a good book. When I retire one day, I want to buy a camper van and get touring again. I love travelling.
Q: What do you appreciate about teaching at Prep:
I know, as teachers, we all talk about a very unbalanced lifestyle – but the one thing that I have always appreciated about teaching at Prep is the care for the children and how we always put the child’s needs above everything. Prep really is a family and my colleagues are not only the people I work with, but they are also my friends.
